If I remember correctly, that HID warning light indicates that there is a possible malfunction with the auto-leveling motor of your HID system. If you have your owner's manual, you should be able to find what that warning light particularly means.

My knowledge is quite limited on how to approach this HID leveling problem, but it sounds to me that you'd rather not go to a dealership and fork over $$$ to have this fixed. Like you mentioned, it could probably be that the motor or sensor is bad, but you should realize that the auto-leveling system operates with the suspension on your car. So if say one of your struts has lost rigidity or whatever, then that itself could easily affect the leveling system of your HID's.

I'm just thinking out loud here, so don't take it with a grain of salt. My feeling is that the dealership is the most informed about this kind of problem, but you may likely have to pay up in order for them to see the problem.
