Default struts

I have a 1995 ES 300, with 87k miles. I was told that I need new struts on the front, but the car rides smooth and I haven't noticed any differance in the handling or ride since this mechanic said this. He also said if I didnt replace the struts that my transmission could go out. Now, I've never heard this before. So ..... is this true? I really need to know. and how can I check to see if the struts do need replacing. and does anyone know of a reliable mech. here in Tulsa that won't cheat a woman?(or anyone else)

are you sure you heard him right? you can maybe bottom out and hit your trans/oil pan, but i dont think those extend pass the frame so theres no way of those hitting the ground.
some signs of worn out struts:

Excessive rebound or float
Wander or poor tracking
Poor steering response
Too much body wallow or lean during lane change or cornering
Corner to corner pitch (corkscrewing motion) during cornering
Excessive dive under braking
Instability during braking
Excessive brake lock-up
ABS engages too quickly and too often
Poor adhesion on rough surfaces (i.e. crossing; railroad tracks)
Frequent bottoming
Harsh ride quality
