Am am still in the planning/buying stage of my audio upgrade to my 2012 ES350. I intentionally bought a Non-Nav system so I can add my head unit. By buying a car without a nav unit, there is no camera installed. So I am wondering how others may have run their new cameras. Specially things like drilling holes for the camera cable and routing ideas.
Does anyone have anything to share on this type of endeavor? Maybe some pictures?
Years ago, I set up a GPS backup camera and this is the link to my installation then. I decided last year that I didn’t need the GPS and I wanted a better camera and I basically use the same install for my new camera and display as I did for my old one, and here’s the link to the new camera and display. .
I really like it. It fits on the old pro clip mount I had, and fit where the old camera was no problem. I didn’t bother hard wiring it to fuse box because I liked the cigarettes lighter adapter they provided with the red led when on, despite the dangly wire. The image is crystal clear day and night and glare not a problem. This pic in garage does not do image justice with snow in driveway🙂
I bought a wireless backup camera from Amazon, because I didn't want to run a wire all the way from the trunk to the front of the car, it works a charm and is much easier to install.
Thanks everyone. Since I am putting in a new head unit as a part of a much larger stereo upgrade, I was more wondering where you drilled your holes to route the cable and how you sealed it from rain and car washes.
I routed mine through the corner of the trunk switch, I just didn't screw it down all the way (so it didn't pinch the cable), considering it's pointed downwards as long as you don't power wash that area then the chances of water getting in is very low.
I drilled a small hole with a grommet behind the license plate. I'd like to show you a couple pics but it's covered up inside by the trim piece and outside by the plate. I do have to cut a small notch out my plates when they change but it works as it's covered up by the mounting bracket.
