2000 ES with P0420 , need help.....
Details:
- At the begining, it was intermittent, comes and goes. At times CEL will go off when I fill with Shell !!!
- Once it became permanent, it remained that way except one time , explained below
- Car idles, runs as a new one. No acceleration issue, 75-80mph can be driven with no issues at all
- No other CEL
- No white smoke
- Tried few liquid remedies, nothing worked
- Replaced one of the cat , Y shape one, no change
- Two months back, middle of winter, noticed something 'abnormal', no CEL light !!!!. Previous night tank was almost empty - fuel warning appeared , I don't allow it to go below last quarter mark, but my daughter drove till almost to the end. Filled it , and stated driving to work, 60 miles away. Suddenly CEL was gone!..
I don't know what triggered it to go away. Any ideas?
I received a ticket for no inspection. Since my kids started driving , I want to avoid getting pulled over .
How do I fix this ? What parts are needed ? This is California spec car. Does it have 3 or 4 cats? . Can I go with aftermarket? .
Any good shops in North or Central NJ to get this done at reasonable cost ? . Lexus wanted more than $2000 !!. Since I'm the original owner, knows the full history of the car . Any help is much appreciated
That's quite a respectable mileage for any catalyst..
The thing is that unlike the newer cars, you only have One Downstream O2 sensor, hence there is no way to determine which of the 3 Catalysts is giving you issues just by looking at the data from the sensors. Here is a thread on diagnosing P0420 code, I would start with monitoring the Live Data to see if it's not the sensor loosing contact and dropping to 0, and only then start checking the Catalysts physically.
Hope this helps and best of luck!

I'm just wondering how the CEL turned off by itself , that may give a clue to address the issue .
Reached out to an inde mechanic, he quoted minimum $3500 with after market !. He said OEM installed would cost around $5k 😲
