Default CV Axle Grease & Boot Replacement

I purchased a Toyota/Lexus boot kit for the driver side of my car
04438-44051

It comes with two tubes of grease (outer and inner)
90999-94135. (205g)

90999-94131. (175g)

The Lexus Repair manual states the following
  • INSTALL OUTBOARD JOINT BOOT
  • Pack boot with grease in the boot kit.
    • Grease capacity:
    • 205 − 215 g (7.2 − 7.6 oz.)
  • INSTALL INBOARD JOINT BOOT
  • Pack front axle inboard joint boot with grease in the boot kit.
    • Grease capacity:
    • 185 − 195 g (6.5 − 6.9 oz)
As a cross reference, if I were to purchase the Toyota/Lexus Inboard only kit, it comes with grease 90999-94131

As for consistencies, -94135 feels like a sticky toothpaste, & -94131 feels thinner

is a decent video on Toyota boot replacement (passenger side)

A few comments regarding video
Manual recommends
  • placing match marks (paint pen?) on tripod, inboard and outboard joint shaft, so they are reassembles in the same exact locations
  • use a brass drift and hammer, tap on tripod body (not the roller wheels....) to remove & install
  • as listed above in my example, cross reference inboard kit vs entire kit to determine which grease goes where.

UPDATE:
re-booted driver side today

As noted in video(2:38 mark), using a grinder to staked portion of the nut works well. Toyota axle nuts are thick (certainly thicker than aftermarket), and you risk deforming the threads on the CV if you don't properly relieve the stake

Overall the job was straight forward. The tripod joint slipped off with a few lite taps w/brass drift. Reassembly - boots went on without a fight, etc..

Yes the job is a bit messy but had Tub O Towels and plenty of paper towels.

If your axles are fine and only need boots, I strongly recommend this path and not aftermarket replacement axles. If axles are needed see if Toyota offers re-mans for your year. Enter 10 digit parts code and add 84 to the end. Toyota remans are not available for my year Lexus
