Default Engine noise 1999 ES300

I was wondering if the noise I’m hearing from the engine is normal? From the moment I start the car it is there. You can hear it throughout the entire drive until you shut the engine off. It can be heard during acceleration/idle and also in the cabin with the radio on at a modest hearing level. The noise sounds like a whirring. That’s the best thing I can think of when trying to find something to imitate that sound.

That can be so many things- in the cabin, a blower motor, or under the hood, a bearing going bad, a vacuum leak, or a transmission noise, etc. Does the "noise" pitch vary with engine speed, or vehicle speed? without more specifics or being there listening, that's a tough one to diagnose.

It does increase a bit with engine speed and I say that because at idle it can heard but nowhere near as loud.

Does it change when you depress or release the brakes? Try it when it’s idling.

It changes when the transmission is engaged into either gear (reverse or drive) from idle into reverse it increases slightly shifting to drive it backs down then while accelerating it goes to roughly about the same loudness as when reversing. I’m guessing, and I’m probably wrong, that it may be the tranny or some component of the drivetrain. What exactly? No clue.

About the only thing in your cabin that “whirs” is your AC Fan. Check your cabin air filter. Too often they’re overlooked and often neglected and a cause of early fan motor noises and failures.

If your ears deceive you, a good tool for locating strange sounds under the hood is a mechanic’s stethoscope for about $20 online. They have a handheld wand that can be used to probe around with and help find sources of strange sounds.

And, when was the last time the various fluid levels under the hood were checked or serviced?

Great information and the car was last serviced recently on 08/05/19. I’ll make sure to check the cabin air filter.
