Default shift solenoid?

So every now and again I get a flashing "O/D" light on my dash. There's no "Check Engine" lights and the transmission fluid seems to be fine. In reading some posts people have had to change a "shift solenoid". Is there any way to check/test to see if this is functioning or if I in fact need to change this? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Hoping that I don't need to change the trans.

You should hook up a code reader there may be codes stored.

Will the code reader they use at Autozone work and if so will I need to wait till the "O/D" light starts flashing? Because it doesn't flash all the time.
