2001 ES 300 Bad gas mileage, struggles to accelerate..
My gas mileage is beyond horrible, around 9-12 MPG. I have to fill up every few days. It feels like I'm driving a school bus, especially when going up a hill or accelerating getting onto the highway. I have to basically floor it to get onto the highway to get up to speed.
No error codes, nothing stored in memory. local mechanic can't figure it out.
This car has been a lemon since I bought it, but goes through stretches of running smooth and like a beast, perfect. 150,000 thousand miles.
Here is what I have replaced/did, in order from most recent, in the past year:
- Replaced Fuel Filter, Air Filter
- Sea Foam in both gas and oil tanks
- Replaced knock sensors and wiring harness
- Replaced 2 out of 3 cats that were failing
- Replaced brake pads and rotors
- Replaced all 6 ignition coils
- Replaced oil control valve - my engine was misfiring at this point and I thought it was the coils, so I bought them - turns out it was the OCV, but it damaged the cats in the process so I had to replace those as well
- Replaced O2 sensor that was failing
- Replaced all spark plugs
As you can see, I've put a crapload of money into this car since I bought it 1.5 years ago and its still struggling and I'm about fed up with it. But I can't sell it because anyone would notice what its doing during a test drive.
What are my options? Where do I go next?
Idles fine, new battery as well...oil change frequently..tires are old and thats what I was gonna do next after I get this figured out

That's terrible. Maybe your vvti is screwed up, I hope someone can chime in because you have thrown a bucket of money into that thing and for it to be performing like that is pathetic.

so you say you replaced 2 of 3 Cats?
My dad's 2001 odyssey van had a terrible performance problem when going up hills.
He had misfires, replaced all spark plugs and coils, but same problem.
Felt really sluggish and the RPMs would get stuck, terrible burning smell.
Turns out this problem was the Catalytic converter being clogged. When I removed it was full of metal chunks and carbon/dirt.
Replaced the CAT and the car is running perfect now.
Try and have that last CAT tested, usually you can tell of the temps before and after CAT are way off, should be hot in the front and hotter in the rear, use a temp gun to check there's videos on it.
