I just replaced the turn signal switch on my 1999 es 300. Now when I turn off the car and lock the door twice the lights stay on even though I have it set to auto. If I unlock the car and switch the lights off auto then they turn off. Any way to fix this? Please and thanks for your help.

 

I'm no expert but..........how long do you usually wait before turning the lights off physically? I have my lights set to auto in my 1999 ES and the lights do take a few seconds before they turn off, but they do turn off by themself.

 

They used to turn off instantly when i hit the lock button twice. If I didn't press the lock button twice they would automatically turn off after about 30 seconds. Now they stay on either way.

 

So do they stay on unless you flip the switch in the car?

 

No, if I flip the switch from auto to on and then back to auto again they will turn off. This is when the engine is off and i have locked and unlocked the car. If I flip the switch to off they will stay off.

 

A few questions for you first:


Where did you buy the turn signal switch from?

Is it new or used?

Is it an original Lexus part with the same part number as your original turn signal switch?

What was wrong with the original turn signal switch, that caused you t change it?

Do you still have the original turn signal switch?

DId you change it yourself?

I bought a used turn signal switch on ebay. It is an original Lexus part with the same part number. I do have my old turn signal switch which had the following issue. If I didn't click the turn signal very gently it wouldn't make contact and the turn signal wouldn't blink. Instead it would make the clicking noise very fast but no light. I changed the part myself.

I have cleaned the contacts on my old turn signal switch. They were covered in grease.

 

I'm going to go reinstall my old turn signal switch and see what happens.

 

If I were you, I would put the old switch back temporeraly just to see if your light problem gets resolved.

Now that you've done it once already, it shouldn't take you that long to do it again. If the problem does get resolved, than its probably a problem with the used turn signal switch you got.

It will also give you an opportunity to double check your connections.

I'm with Phil, it seems like the used one you bought may have an issue. I would contact the eBay seller if in fact it isn't working properly, I'm sure you'd be able to return it and get a refund.

 

Ok installing the old one didn't fix the problem.

 

Also, I don't have enough juice in the battery to start the car now. I'm going to jump it. You think if I drive on the highway for ten minutes it will recharge the battery?

 

just a thought ... check the plug(s) for a damaged pin, or a pin which was pushed back into the plug. I'm guessing this is a minor electrical issue rather than a failed sensor or issue with both stalks.

 

Thanks for all your help. This morning when I backed out the RX to jump the ES I noticed that my trunk was open. smh. FacePalm!

 

Fully agree with ES300NZ. After you get your battery issue sorted, double check the connector, and it's associated pins, and wires.

Chances are good that you will find your cause there.
