Disconnecting remote entry
 

Paid 1000$ To locksmith to redo keys for our son's stolen1997 es300 after it was returned . ( dealer was charging 1500). As an afterthought, he mentioned that the remote entry in possession of the thief would still work even though locks have been changed. Question- if we were to erase the old remote that that we have, will that reprogram the vehicle so that thief's old remote will no longer function for our vehicle? We are out of money on this thing, so please don't say take it to the dealer. I have read a lot on the Forum about programming etc., but wondered if we should just find a way to remove an ECU for this process, just to be sure. Son is okay with no remote entry until he saves money to take it to the dealer and get some other electrical door switch issues fixed ( that were present before the theft).

You can go into the ECU with a programmer and erase all the keys and program only those in your possession but I don't know about the remotes. But it is a scary thought knowing a thief out there could gain entry to your vehicle.

Would some type of alarm be a option?

When reprogramming a remote I *think* (but I can't guarantee it) it erases all previous remotes and overwrites it with the current remote you are programming. So if you have one working remote, all you have to do is follow the reprogramming procedure to reprogram it and it should erase the stolen remote.... (maybe you can try it if you have multiple remotes first).

The second and most confident method is to disconnect the wireless door lock receiver ECU. Its a small box, located in the dash just below/ behind the HVAC controls. It is bolted to metal side frame in the center dashboard with a single 10mm bolt. Simply unplug it and you should be good to go. The box is marked as "wireless door control" or something to that nature so you can't miss it.

Thanks to all responders! Reason I am called not my job is because my husband is not on this visit to my kids, he's 1000s of miles away and this car stuf is NOT MY JOB" lol. Have learned a lot from the web n the last few months of stolen car drama and I am a better person for it! The responses confirm my thinking in that the most preventive procedure is to meddle with that ECU. Will take the diagram with to our trusted mechanic in another town and he will mentor its removal or at least, disconnection. Happy Halloween.
