Engine Ticking - Help with Possible Causes
Hi. I'm Ray. I'm in the process of restoring a 1997 Lexus ES300. I recently had the oxygen sensor and knock sensor 2 replaced per a diagnostic test. I was hoping the knock sensor and new harness would correct a continuous tick I hear in my engine. It almost sounds like a bent rod. Well, needless to say, the check engine light is back on after a day. This time, it's only showing the oxygen sensor, which has already been replaced twice (I thought the 1st was defective). I intend to take advantage of a free engine diagnostic test coupon from AAMCO. However, I would like to be armed with some insight before venturing into a pool of sharks. Any advice concerning possible causes and inexpensive testing and fixes would be greatly appreciated.

If you have a CEL, the first thing is to find out what it is. You can do this quickly for free - stop at most any auto parts chain and they will loan you a code reader. The connector is easily accessible under the steering wheel. Read the code and then consult a list of codes to see where the ECU is finding a fault. I use my local O'Reilly Auto as they are handy. They loan a large number of specialty tools.
