Well I slacked for two weeks now. Got the rear main seal replaced, flex plate back on and torqued. Hardest part was lining the transmission back up. So much fun.
Pic 1. Old engine. Found my oil leak! Oil was all over the flex plate
Pic 2. New engine. Installed RMS.
Pic 3. Tranny re-attached to motor.

I took today off to work on her and hopefully pick up another car i don't need. Looking at a 88 300zx turbo Shiro edition. Kinda psyched for $600!
Got my variable spanner wrench for holding the cams and a schely crank damper holder to break the bolt. All my seals and timing belt came in yesterday.

Well I got all the cam seals in, front seal, water pump gasket and new timing belt. Cleaned everything up too so she's nice and clean.
This tool is the bomb for getting the crank bolt off. Don't buy expensive breaker bars. Notice I used the jack handle from floor jack!
The next two pics are how I remove the seals. Take an 3/16" drill bit and almost drill a hole all the way through. Make sure you blow any shavings off. Then take a drywall screw and screw it in. Take a pair of plyers and give a good tug. Comes right out! My dad taught me this.
All finished and pretty! Now I have to just torque the crank pulley down.
Check out the camshaft damage. This is from the old engine. So cyl 1 had no compression and on the other side the cam was bad. What I think happened was cyl 1 died and caused some sort of timing issue. Timing marks were spot on.

Was hoping to get some more work done but sigh, my son decided to do something something dumb!
As a Teen driver I had my fair share of stupid tickets and accidents. Seems my son is following in my footsteps! He's one of the smartest, dumb people I know!
This why I refussed to paint his car. He was going fast, came up behind a slower car, decided to pass, realized he was going head on with another car and couldn't make and went off road to far left through mud, water and lodged the car nicely on large Palmetto Palm. So much fun waiting 2 hours on a tow truck. Just glad no one was hurt.

Did the plug gaskets and valve cover gaskets today. The LH side I think can be accessed in the car without removing the plenum I think. You just have to remove the Throttle body (Pic 2). Also I had to remove the RH side again I totally forgot I left a rag in the block!
My JY motor is nice and clean too! Fingers still crossed!

The inside looks so clean. Is that because you cleaned it or is that how it was?
How many miles were on this engine?
As for the plug gasket, how hard was it to remove and any special tools needed to replace them?

I honestly don't know. The gauge cluster was gone in the car. I pulled the valve cover at the JY to make sure it was good. What I think happend is this motor was also swapped in the car I pulled it from.

Once the covers are off its a breeze. There are two metal tabs that you have to bend up is it. The hard part is getting the covers off! I'm so glad I'm doing all this maintenance stuff with the motor out!
