fortunately for me my buddy is a napa parts guy who was a mechanic back in the day before he hurt his back so he knows both ends of the parts biz, so when i'm on the phone with him discussing it he was correcting me and asked me to confirm back to the mechanic with a phone call to make 100% sure we were on the same page.

What I ordered was the correct part.

sounds like you are on the right track.
THIS ^^^ You're awsome for posting the pics. That's exactly what I was trying to explain. And now the bad news for me.. I've gone ahead and replaced that second VSS and, no go. It didn't solve my P0500 code.
New question is this: Are you and TaninAuto saying that a bad cluster will throw the speed sensor code? I've tried swapping both of those sensors enough that it almost can't be the sensors themselves. Is it possible that once I get a cluster that works the sensors themselves will, well work?
Is my bad cluster making it seem as though the speed sensors aren't working?

For TaninAuto.. Following the link you have posted to your repair service I see it says that there are three different part numbers for the clusters: 97-98, 99 and 2000-2001 and that they are not interchangeable.. I take this to mean that any one of the three will not fit into a car of the other two years? i.e. a 2000 cluster will not fit 99, a 2001 wont fit a 98?

Due to subtle changes between the years that is correct
