I had the same issue. Apparently the car needs to relearn to idle after the battery is disconnected or dies. I needed the car that weekend for a long trip so I didn't have time to figure it out and fix it myself, the dealer took care of it (expensive). No idea if this is true but I've heard it is done by driving the car around allowing it to "relearn". Hopefully someone else who knows for sure will drop in.

No it's common. You disconnected your battery so it resets the computer's memory that once knew how to idle, when to shift, etc. Give it a day of driving and it will be back to normal. It is not uncommon for the car to shut off. This happens to Camry's too.

Unless I am reading this incorrectly, the vehicle in question starts then shuts right off. If that is accurate then no, it's not common, no it should not do that, and no it's not a relearn situation especially since it would be totally undriveable in that condition.
It would be advisable to pull codes as it might point to the sensor that is at fault. If, on the other hand, it starts and sputters and dies if you don't keep your foot on the gas then it's possible it's a relearn situation although that's about the most harsh relearn I've seen.

I know this is an older thread, but I have the exact situation that is happening to me. I have 2002 300ES and just had to change my Starter. After replacing it, my car ran well for a minute and even took it down the block for 5 minutes. I started it about 20 minutes later and it would turn-over and idle very low for a second, then die. I cranked it several times after that and would idle for 1/2 second and die. When I would keep the throttle up, it would still run (sounded bad and could smell fumes) but as soon as I would try to let it idle, it would die immediately. I checked the connections from when I had to change the starter and they all seem fine.
I do not see what the final outcome was and would appreciate any thoughts on what the problem might be.

2002 Lexus Es300 Low Idle when turning blower on High/Max, Stalls
I'm having same problems with Low Idle and stalling. When car is started and sitting idle it stays running. I turn the Heat on High/Max and the draw seems to make the engine idle poorly and eventually stall. I just replaced the old orig. thermostat with a new Failsafe. Don't think that is causing the stalling issues though. Prior to this the overflow container has a small nipple pc. on the outside of the cap and noticed coolant flowing out of that and onto the ground. Is this normal? Car has 177,000 orig. miles, Tennessee Car. Oil has been maintenanced regularly and is clean. New radiator and new coolant. I also noticed that inside the car you can hear the blower on high but, hardly any heat coming out the vents up front. Could it be possible the blower has debri or the heater core not putting out? The heater core hasnt been leaking inside the vehicle, no wet floor board. Thanx for any input.
