Shocks and Struts Question.

So there is this thumping at front when i go over little bumps, the bigger the bump on the road the louder the thump, i recently changed the Cushions on the struts because the original ones disintegrated, but it was no difference, i disconnected the sway bar links on both struts and still thumps.
Could it be that i need new mounts? when i replaced the cushions i looked at the mounts and they look fine but then again i don't know what to look for if they are bad.

Any help, thoughts.

I have the same issue and just ordered some new struts. I'll let you know if that works. My cushions are also shot, do those also need to be replaced?

ur shocks are gone. they are bottoming out and ur running only on springs
and never drive ur car with disconnected sway bar links. it's not very safe

do a push test. continuously push a corner of your car down with both your arms as hard as u can. if ur suspension is healthy, it should go down about an inch or two.

if it bounces up and down a lot more and continues to bounce if u let go of ur hands, then ur only on ur springs, shocks are gone.

also when ur shocks are gone, and u drive over a bump, have someone look at the wheel from a few meters away and if you can see the wheel hop up and down, then ur shocks are gone.

ok i just tried the pushing down, the front goes down and it comes up and bounce 1 time, the back how ever when i push down it goes down and then comes up really slow.

They're fine, that's what they should do. I would check the ball joints and the control arm mounts.

If you hear a thump, then it's more than likely your strut mounts.

EEngineer Jul 15, 2011 11:23 PM

best strut spring combo = tokico + H&R or Koni Yellow + H&R

best coilover = JICs, BC Racing

Ball-Joints are good, Arm Mounts good.

Strut mounts good, i took all 4 struts off and replaced the cushions and all 4 look good, no damage of any kind.

Okay if suspension pieces have been ruled out...

It would have to be within the drive axles... check both the inner and outer CV joints for shaft endplay or any looseness for that matter. This would also include checking the shafts movement going in and out of the transmission. It would likely be loose outer joints and/or the grease within the boots have been worn down to a liquid.

Hows your alignment? Do you have even tire wear? Take a close look at the control arm bushings. Most of the time, the clunking you are hearing is one or both of the bushings.

my first reply wouldve been sway bar bushings, but good to see the end links were bad. the lower bolt is a pain to get.

Ariyanna Jul 24, 2011 08:47 PM

Which brand end links did u use??

Ariyanna Jul 24, 2011 09:10 PM

U have a link???

LiCelsior Jul 25, 2011 07:10 AM

do a rebound test for the rear, push down each side of the rear bumper and see if it bounces back up a lot.

I found these from the same seller what u think?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

The only thing I question is the quality are they as good as the originals or did they feel and look cheaper???
