DIY Clean 98 ES300 MAF sensor

It does reduce the rev time from starting the engine.
From 3-4 seconds to 1-2 seconds.
Reduce the big white smoke from starting too.
Hope it will improve the MPG from 21MPG too.
Before cleaning, it was totally black, almost saw nothing wire inside.
Spay directly from the front for a few seconds. Let it dry. Less than 30min job only.
I used Carb Cleaner, CRC cleaner are recommended too.

ok so when u start the car in mornings the engine will rev up and stay like that for a minute or two ( in summer @least)..but i have noticed ion my car that when i start the car the needle first stays @ low rmp...like around 1-2 and then within seconds will rev up to the usual 2-3 rmp (eventually coming back to normal ideal rmp)..i dont know why it does that? is it due to battery or this MAF sensor? or maybe i put some LEDs inside (under footwell)??? any idea?

In summer time, when the starter move ~1 second @ 1-1500 rpm, once the engine start it will jump a little to ~2500 rpm. But it will drop to ~1200 rpm at once. It is normal for me.
I think the unburnt fuel were collected and exploded to make it jump.
For the first 1-2 mins, it will remain 1000~1200rpm. After it warm up that will drop to ~700rpm.
Did you cleaner the TB/IVAC before?

Even better, CRC makes a MAF sensor aerosol spray available at most auto parts stores. Ive had good results. Smoother idle, cured a slight highway surging issue in the cold as well.
I wouldn't use carb or brake cleaner like many personally..... its a 200$+ part. I wouldnt touch the wires either... Disconnecting the negative battery cable or pulling the ecm fuse for ten or fifteen minutes wouldn't be a bad idea either when your done...

Thanks to download, great Post...
download, i want to do this for my 1997 es300 too, bought it recently and in the mornings the idle goes to 1.5-1.8k rpm for a good 2-3 minutes before it settles down to under 1... also my mpg is terribly..only 17 mpg
just wondering, did this diy do alot for your mpg?

In the mornings the idle is 1200, it settles down to 700 only, quite low.
Mine is 21 mpg and is not very good to me too.
Did you change the plugs? Use syn oil would help a little.

hi download...
so it seems that cleaning the MAF while it is a good idea and should be done didnt really help ur mpg? 21mpg is sitll way better than my 17 lol. i think my throttle body has never been cleaned too..
by "big white smoke" you meant the excessive water vapour that comes out the back? especially in the cold? i get that alot too...in the cold. above 10C there is no 'white smoke'...
i have not changed the spark plugs yet but that is on my list for this week... i think that may help some as they were last changed about 60,000 miles (95,000 km) ago.
i am thinking high mileage oil , the kind that helps with seals, etc? just because the valve covers are old and i dont want thinner synth to cause oil leaks etc...

There are so many things affect the mpg, plug wire, ground wire, plugs, (oxygen, temperature, MAF sensors), fuel injectors.........
I got sludge problem, losing engine oil, so the smoke did not go away.
Lots of small things need to be took care for this 13yrs old car.
But I still like it very much!

My mpg is not good too, because mostly city driving.
I found the big white smoke was the result of Sludge.
And engine sludge result from losing engine oil.
And collect and output when the morning start.
I can't open the engine to clean it out.
Will try the oil catch tank method to solve the losing engine oil.
