I have 1997 ES 300 with 230K on it and it runs like a charm.
However, I have CEL on with a message related to the O2 sensor (canot remember exactly the code). When I went to get a smog check, all paseed with flying colors but there is this one item, 'Malfunction Indicator Light = Fail', that prevents me from registering.
Is there a way to somehow resolve this issue, like disabling the lamp that light the CEL?? Will that be a viable solution? I know eventually I have to replave the O2 sensors but how do they know that my light is out when all other items pass the test??
Your help is much appreciated.

disabling the light wont solve your problem because the computer will still read the error code when they scan it, the O2 sensor is not expensive and replacing it wont coast much it will give you better fuel millage and more engine performance.

i am a state inspector for Texas...our machines are similar and Kevin is right..people disable there lights all the time...in fact used car dealers usually do it the most..the machine asks you if the light is on or off..even if you select off it will tell u Ur wrong and fail the vehicle automatically.. I have replaced o2 sensors just for the gas millage before even with my check engine off...defiantly worth replacing..resetting and driving for 50 miles before you go for the smog check
