There are a lot of options on subs. What year is your car? Are you planning to get a box, or just drop it into the stock location? Are you going to amp it? Aftermarket or stock deck?

Not sure how much you plan on spending, but I just recently added this to my 96ES into a vented box. It might not be the sound you're looking for if you're looking for something "smoother." But if you do go with something like that and want a tighter sounding bass, definitely go for a sealed box, as that will be more of what you're probably looking for.
Also, I recommend getting an aftermarket stereo - that'll make things a whole lot easier once you get to installing it. It'll also make your stock speakers sound 10 times better. The difference is day and night. However, if you do plan on leaving the stock stereo in there, I'm not real sure, but I believe you'll need to bypass the factory amp. There's a thread somewhere on CL, just use the search function at the top of the page and you'll find it.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

I believe you only need to bypass the factory amp if you're installing an aftermarket deck. With a stock deck, you will have to get a line output converter to tap into the stock sub output in the trunk, and connect that to the amp, then the sub.
A sealed box will give you a cleaner, tighter sound, whereas a ported box will give you that extra oomph.

I paid about $300 for the amp, 2 subs, and the enclosure from Amazon. It's a little more expensive now. I got my stereo for $180 from Crutchfield and it came with four 5 1/2 speakers. To be honest, I feel that the stock speakers sound better than the ones that I bought with the new stereo. I'm not sure I would say the new speakers sound nicer. The old ones seemed louder, but the new ones are more "crisp" if that makes any sense.
I say keep the stock speakers for now. Upgrade to a sub and amp first - hear how that sounds. If you want a little more, upgrade your stereo. You might get some alternator whine, you might not. You can use the amp bypass technique or play it easy and get a filter. If you find yourself still wanting more, then upgrade your speakers.
Check out Crutchfield.com. They have alot of good information regarding car audio and they'd probably give you more in depth answers.

i have 2 12 jl audio in a sealed box with a rockford fosgate amp pushing 800+ bridged. both are older models. i got both of the 12s, and 2 amps. and a capacitor from my neighbor for 100. and an pioneer avh-p5700dvd for 300. i like my HU because it has a built in EQ that can remotely control the bass if you will. lok on craigslist and see what you find. sealed will be more accurate and less "sloppy", but a ported will give you more bass, and more rattle, but you lose quality. get rid of the stock HU, because you will start spending money on integrating aftermarket components into it with converters. sav yourself the trouble,
