CEL && TRAC OFF LIGHT Alluminated! NEED HELP!
Hello all,
thanks in advance for the help. I have a 1997 Lexus ES 300 and yesterday while driving, i revved my engine while in park. I revved it probably more than I should have. I got close to red lining it but I am not sure as to how many RPM's i got to. About 15 minutes later, I noticed my CEL light was on. The performance in the car did not seem change while driving on the highway. I got to a stop sign and noticed that my car sputtered when I tried to accelerate forward. At that point, my TRAC OFF light came on. There was snow/ice on the ground and I had been driving for maybe 2 before that in the snow. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I researched what the problem may be. O2 sensor, MAFS, and loose gas cap was some of the things that came up. I have not got a chance a to take it to a reputable mechanic as its Sunday. I plan on calling tomorrow to try and take it in or get an appointment.
My question is, based on the what happened, can anyone tell me what they think, just by what it sounds like, what the problem could be? I am really hoping that its not something that will cost me hundreds of dollars.

what type of suspension does your car have?
why were you reving the engine? was the engine cold?
What code is stored in the computer? Can't give you my think until I have that.

Strut front and rear suspension with stabilizer bar independent with coil springs. There really was no apparent reason for me revving my engine. I guess I was doing it just because I was waiting for someone. The engine it self was not cold. I had been on the road for about 10 minutes. But it was cold outside.
As far as the codes, I as well do not have them. I am taking the car into a mechanic sometime this week hopefully tomorrow or tuesday. I will post when I know the codes.

I have no idea. I am really car e literate. I just took it out to drive for about 20 minutes to see if there was anything I could note to tell the mechanic. There really was nothing different than normal which tells me that it cant be anything TO serious otherwise I would feel, hear or see something different than normal.

i would
check gas cap
clean MAF, its right near the air filter
try those 2 free things. If you can, go to autozone or a parts place that will check the code for free. Have them clear the codes and if they come back on search here for the codes and go from there.

Another way to turn off the idiot lights is to disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes, then re-attach it. You may then have to reset your car's clock and your saved radio station frequencies.
Don't worry too much about the lights. Pretty much all of the causes of the lights activating are due to pollution control system issues. Your car will probably run the same as it always has.

Well as Ironic as this sounds, just this evening my check engine light & Trac off light illuminated. Any suggestions would be helpful. The car drove as should/normal for my ten mile trip back home. I'll check the basics inherit to Lexus but hope someone can shed some knowledge. Thanks and hopefully it was ok to post my issue in this thread without posting a new thread.

I asked was the code stored right when the gas was changed [yes or no]?
also, get the codes. codes dont tell the full story, but they are helpful in solving.
