My ES has 115,000 miles, but is as smooth and responsive as ever. I got the car with 95k, and if anything, seems faster now. How long can I expect to have good performance? Will it degrade with milage? Was this car a lot faster when it had only 15,000 miles.
I remember American cars that lost the edge by 50K and were lucky to just be running reliably at 100k. Is it the same with the ES?
Glad to hear your opinion. Is your high milage Lex slower now?? thanks
theres a BIG difference between the domestics and the import cars.
(don't get me wrong... they can make MONSTER power) domestics do tend to drop off after a certain period by what i've seen
but the imports seem to keep running strong as long as you take care of them. Of course things are going to break and wear, and that's what will slow you down... but keep your oil changes up, and make sure you do your tune ups and you should have a good running car no matter what.
My car is currently sitting on 180k miles and the guy at the toyota dealership that i take it to says it has got more kick than any camry/solara/ES he's ever driven. Which means alot to me.
He says it's probably a mixture of the intake, and the new tranny which loves to change gears at high RPM'S

Cars seem to work better as it gains more mileage simply because the parts are well broken in. You can expect to keep your good performance by doing your maintenance regularly. I'm pretty sure your car is faster now than it was with only 15k. It's built by a legendary company with reliability...Toyota Motor Corporation. These cars can run past 100, 200 and 300k with no effort...granted you do the regular maintenance.
It all depends on who your previous owner was. If you had lead foot driving it, then yeah you'll be loosing power. If grandma or soccer mom drove it, then you'll probably be ok. Domestics and Imports will always be different. Domestics tend to focus on power over reliability. If you look at statistics, people tend to keep their cars for a few years and sell after that. The manufacturers could care less after they'd sold a car. Its all pretty much a marketing thing. Anyways back to your question. If you treat your engine well it'll last a logn time, if you treat it like a racecar then it won't. Just use good oil (FULL Synthetic), do proper maintenance and you'll be fine. As far as being faster than it was at 15K miles, highly doubtful. You've lost compression since then, and loss of compression = less power. Rings will wear out, they dont get better. Ask anyone that knows anything about engines, a new broke in motor is far superior to an older used engine.
If your car is slower in its later years compared to when it was brand new, then that's going to be due to wear and tear from age. If you fix those parts now, then your car should be driving like new again. That's everything from engine/tranny to suspension parts. Your car doesn't have to just go on a downward spiral in its life....if you have the money you can fix it. But this is where it's just more financially feasible to trade her in for something else newer.
