I think your case involves the hybrid batteries, not the 12 volt "car" battery. The hybrid batteries cost around $3500. There are cheaper rebuilds since these are the same hybrid batteries as in the millions of Pruis out there.

search for a Prius mechanic. they can load test the high voltage battery and tell you if there's any issues. Priuschat can help recommend one in your area.
my Camry Hybrid's OEM 12V battery finally died about a month ago. Panasonic battery with a manufacture date of May 2006 Longest lasting 12V battery I've ever heard of.
actually when I was just barely outside the warranty period, around June of last year, I had one cell go bad in the high voltage pack. it cost me less than $200 for a Prius mechanic to fix it.
