Buying slightly used is a very sensible financial idea. But economics is not always driving human behavior. I was prepared to buy a certified used IS but after examining what they had - I could not find anything that would appeal to me. Even worse, I could not find anything new on the lot that I would like. I finally realized that the IS I would like is nowhere to be found within the radius of 1000 miles. So I ordered one. I usually keep cars for the duration of their lifetime so I don't expect to be shocked by resale value.
