The News
Saturday morning before dawn, I met my buddy Kent Moore in a Costa Mesa parking lot and we rumbled down to the unofficial weekly car shows at Donut Derelicts in Huntington Beach and Crystal Cove in Newport in his gray-over-salmon '55 Chevy.
I hadn't been since a colleague, John Gittelsohn, wrote a front-page story about the Crystal Cove gathering of exotics. Kent said there'd been some talk that since that story ran, Newport Beach police had started patrolling the strip of PCH on Saturday mornings to catch speeders and guys lighting 'em up.
Sure enough, the black-and-whites were out there Saturday, and when I called Sgt. Bill Hartford this week, he confirmed that "because of your newspaper's inquiries," police have discovered "there were some issues of driver conduct that needed to be addressed."
Translation: 39 speeding tickets written the last two Saturday mornings. A good reason in future trips out there to keep my Register notebook concealed like a cop hiding his badge at a biker bar.
Ah, but that sweet ol' '55. In the 1970s, my dad had three of them in various states of rust management, including a jacked-up two-door my sister Mary drove until she hit a deer coming home late one night from her waitress shift at Pea Soup Anderson's in Buellton.
