I'm 99% sure its the same engine as in my bro's 97 avalon.... or is it the vvti 1mzfe? Either way, I've worked with both since my parents have the vvti's. I've done my bro's front valve cover gasket at home which is a very very easy job but needed to drive it to the dealer to have my friend do the back one since you need Toyota tools. If you do those, I'd highly reccomend you do the cam seals at the same time because those tend to leak very bad aswell on these cars.

it's not a bad job if you have some decent tools, and some patience!

if one is leaking, the other won't be far behind. might as well get it done and forget about it. you can look at it and find out. that's what the hood release is for! j/k

Ha Ha I know I'm no mechanic so I don't want to attempt this so if anyone wants to help a brother out. I would gladly appreciate a shop recommendation or a helpful CL members expertise In the suburbs or chicago area to save some money!
