BMW of North America Reports Q4 2022 and Full Year 2022 U.S. Sales Results.

Files

  • BMW finishes 2022 strong as Q4 sales increase 9.4% vs Q4 2021. Total year 2022 sales down slightly by 1.3% vs 2021.
    • Q4 2022 electric vehicle sales surpassed totals achieved in the previous three quarters combined.
      • U.S. Built Sports Activity Vehicles from Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina account for just over 60% of U.S. sales.
        • Q4 2022 MINI sales increase by 31.3% vs Q4 2021. Total year 2022 sales show slight decline of 1.4% vs 2021.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 4, 2023… BMW of North America today reported Q4 2022 and full year 2022 sales results for the BMW and MINI brands in the U.S.

BMW Brand
In the 4th quarter of 2022, BMW brand sales in the U.S. totaled 101,738 vehicles, a 9.4% increase from the 93,031 vehicles sold in the 4th quarter of 2021. For the full year 2022, BMW brand sales decreased slightly by 1.3% on total sales of 332,388 compared to the 336,644 vehicles sold in 2021.

BMW Electric Vehicle Sales
In March 2022, the fully electric BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle and BMW i4 Gran Coupe began arriving at U.S. dealerships. In the 9 months that followed, sales of the all-new electric vehicles increased steadily as inventory levels improved. A third fully electric model, the BMW i7 Sedan, went on sale in late November.

In the 4th quarter alone BMW sold 8,689 electric vehicles, surpassing the totals achieved in the previous three quarters combined. For the full year 2022, BMW sold 15,584 fully electric vehicles in the U.S., accounting for approximately 4.7% of total U.S. sales.

In addition to the fully electric BMW iX, BMW i4 and BMW i7, the company’s electrified lineup in the U.S. will expand when the plug-in hybrid electric BMW XM Sports Activity Vehicle arrives in showrooms this quarter. BMW already offers plug-in hybrid electric variants of some of its most popular models including the BMW X5 xDrive45e, BMW 330e and BMW 530e.

“With 3 fully electric BMW vehicles and several plug-in variants now available at U.S. dealerships, we are firmly on the road to electrification, offering our customers all of the performance, technology, luxury, and quality that BMW is known for – now also in an emissions free package,” said Sebastian Mackensen, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “At the same time, I’d like to recognize the pivotal role that our dealer network and Plant Spartanburg continue to play in our sales success in the U.S.”

Built in the U.S., Sold in the U.S.
Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina built just over 60% of the BMW vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2022 and continues to be a main driver of the company’s success. Despite lingering production challenges, the plant achieved its second highest annual output last year while also adding the all-new BMW XM to its model lineup.

MINI Brand
MINI brand sales in the U.S. totaled 10,319 vehicles in the 4th quarter of 2022, an increase of 31.3% vs the 7,860 vehicles sold in the fourth quarter of 2021. For the full year 2022, MINI brand sales decreased slightly by 1.4% on total sales of 29,504 vehicles compared to the 29,930 vehicles sold in 2021.

Question Gm

GM has not updated their news/media pages in months so have not found the numbers to post but here is some info:

https://finance.yahoo.com/video/gm-o...213759498.html

GM overtakes Toyota as top automaker in U.S., auto industry accesses 2022 sales

Wed, January 4, 2023 at 4:37 PM ESTSEANA SMITH: Auto sales numbers are out. And GM has reclaimed its title as a top seller in the US. Sales for 2022 totaling 2.27 million. That's up 2 and 1/2 percent from what we saw a year ago and pushing shares higher today. Look at that, the stock closing up just about 2 and 1/2 percent.

And Pras Subramanian here with more on this. And Pras, I guess, good news for GM, but overall clearly a challenging year for the auto industry?

PRAS SUBRMANIAN: Yeah, for sure. GM, good news there. They're number one overall America, number one in total truck sales, a number of things like that, up 2.5% last year sales-wise, up 41% in Q4. So sort of reflecting that they really had an improvement compared to last year with all the chip shortages and things like that.

So Toyota there, their rival, you see there, 2.1, so barely missing out, but down 9.6%. They were really hit this year with those parts shortages, chip shortages. They've cut their outlook a couple of times last year, so not a good year for them. But still, 2.1 million nothing to sneeze at there.

Looking at it, GM actually sees that their ICE and gas-powered businesses actually will see potential sales of-- across the industry of $15 million to-- from $14.1 million last year. So they see the actual gas business growing overall for the industry. And then EVs of course, they upped their Bolt production to 70,000 per year. They have three new EVs come out next year. And their Factory Zero all-EV plant opens mid-next year too. So a lot going on for GM as well.

DAVE BRIGGS: Just remarkable, that split though, in year over year between GM and Toyota, wow. All right, broader expectations across the industry as the '22 numbers roll in, what are you thinking?

PRAS SUBRMANIAN: Yeah, as we get more and more these numbers-- Ford tomorrow-- then the industry will put together their sort of projection for what 2022 was. So we're looking at "Edmunds" here, looking at a number of around what 13.9-- sorry, *** Auto, 13.9 million for 2022. That's down 8% from last year, down 20% from peak levels in like 2015-2016.

So we're not going to see these days before of 17 million units sold in a year. Those days are over. Automakers are sort of seeing the numbers and higher prices, price inflation, higher rates. We're never going to see those days, at least for a long time. And right now, it's more about can you sell cars at a decent margin, make money, and not sell as much?

DAVE BRIGGS: Yeah, auto dealers really liked that COVID dynamic, right? They didn't have a lot of inventory, but the prices were sky high, and they didn't have to have a lot of employees. It all worked out well for them. Pras, good to see you. Thank you.

Wow, I had to go on VW website just to see what they currently offer. This rarely gets talked about, but they have a pitiful lineup right now.

I have yet to see the new GTI/Golf R in person (such a step back in design) and those low numbers tells the story. Tiguan, it's highest selling model tops at 40k and it's most powerful engine only has 184hp?!?! Lol, what a penalty box that must be. Jetta's have been awkwardly cheap and lame for the past 2-3 generations, Arteon while cool, literally never ever, ever sold anything. Atlas for 53k, wouldn't even consider that vehicle in it's class with all the other great options available at lower prices.

So that just leaves the EV. And pretty much these days, if you have even a halfway decent EV, it's going to sell.

But it's German, so it gets a pass.

lexus nx new design doing really great 4x vs '21.
Seeing the new NX, I can see why it sells well. I wonder what happened to the RX. So much talk about "getting the last V6". Even last December, I thought the number would be higher for its popularity. And the MDX too. Almost no reaction and still low sales number compared to their "direct" competitors.

I tihnk they stopped producing the last generation RX a few months ago. Whats probably being sold now is just whats left over on lots until the new generation becomes more widely available.
