The real question is why would (anyone) leave the engine running while refueling. If it won’t start for some reason, then you’d have to but otherwise?

People filling up in the pump behind or next to you are not going to appreciate breathing in the unnecessary exhaust fumes if you leave the car running. Is there even a good reason to leave it running?

In my experience you have to drive a car around for about a day for it to trigger an evap leak. Same when you fix the gas cap for CEL to turn off.

Unless ya'll like to be car jacked.
.
Lol it's not about your safety from criminals. I avoid nasty gas stations and live in a safe area.

Music stays on, HVAC stays on. I can get back in and stay comfortable and watch the needle slowly refill. It's just a personal preference to me. Both my cars have large gas tanks, it takes a sec. There are no cons, except the false perception of it being truly dangerous. Cars would lock it out if it really was. Race cars don't cut their engines at pit stops, not the same thing but just FWIW.

Whats your reason for leaving it running?
Knoxville is a city where you used to leave your car running when you go into a gas station, I still do it sometimes. I'm street smart enough to know my surroundings and adjust accordingly.

I'm not annoyed at the cars in front of me in traffic that emit carbon monoxide. What's the difference?

For example I'd leave my car running if it were still warming up while filling up. For more heat faster.

Historically speaking in-race quick re-fueling is dangerous as hell and has lit many people on fire. This isn't the same type of deal but it would only be fair to point out all the rule changes that came about from accidents

Cool deal this may not apply to ya'll, but that would be my biggest concern leaving the car running especially with women and children.
Reason why, when I look around most people are in day dream land- whistling dixie or something-, clueless to their environment.
And- this applies to everywhere I go, I'll be the only one looking around 360 degrees on alert.

Now with that said I have probably filled my vehicle a hundred times while running.
When I was younger I considered those flammable warning signs as a suggestion. haha

Hey, when you're driving a car with a bad starter it can be risky to cut the engine at the pump.
Yeah, prob not cool, ya'll be the judge... lol

You are actually correct, a starter is much more likely to light gas off since it forms an arc to get the main winding going. If you have to mess with it a bunch as there is any vapors....

I just don't see any reason to keep it running, only reasons not to. Even if its cold out, its not off long enough for it to get cold inside.

When I return a rental or loaner car I leave the accessories on so I can make sure I don't put more gas in it than I have to but I don't leave the engine running.

I feel you, lol I lived in Los Angeles I know the mean streets. I walked all over 24/7, all kinds of areas. Bar crawling home from DTLA at 3AM in unsafe areas. I’m street smart. Plenty of times over those years I sensed skeeziness and or danger and adjusted. Assert yourself, walk with purpose and confidence and tell bums to FO is all it takes 99% of the time.

There are guns in my cars so I’m not worried but this thread is not about my or my occupants’ safety.

While I usually agree with many of your posts, I have to part company on this one. If you (routinely) gas up with your engine running, it could very well be about your safety.

Telling folks on the street to FO is one thing.....assuming they don't pull a weapon on you. But you can't tell a gas-pump to FO if you are doing something potentially dangerous.

What good does a gun in your car do you if someone jumps in it and drives off while you’re refueling it? Bear in mind that many cars (including mine) have the fuel filler on the passenger side, so if left running there is no way I would be able to stop someone from jumping in and driving off.

Just not a good idea

Dammit, I can't vote on this one cuz I'll feel like a hypocrite either way.
Gassed up so many times whie engine running, it's just I'm more afraid to do it as I get older for several reasons already mentioned.

A realistic fire danger or it safe?
I don't really 100.000000% know so don't know what to think.

Sitting back to see what ya'll come up with, dang. lol

Who is going to jump in my car and accost me when I’m sitting in it while it’s refueling?

So I’m assuming security may be an issue. Do you or others lock your car up while filling up?

I don’t live in a big big city like some of you do, remember. You can still leave your car running and dash into a gas station in Knox, at least my area.

If refueling while idling were truly dangerous cars would lock it out. I mean, come on. I gunned my LX today absolutely no brakes and the seatbelts locked up. LS is the same.
