My starter story is having a 84 Camaro that wouldn't restart on a hot day because the exhaust pipes would overheat the starter solenoid. Many a day I would have someone smack the starter with a tire iron while cranking the engine. Eventually I installed a heat shield between the pipes and the starter that helped a bit.
That generation of the f body had the worst layout for anything. The cars looked great but everything underneath sucked. Actually, it continued with the next gen too. lol
That Chrysler trying to start sounds so good once it's finally lit up! Sounds just like my 410 does when I'm dry cranking it.
Speaking of dead starters my Jeep had a trigger wire issue a long time ago and since I am lazy when it comes to that car for about a week and change I used a 1911 mag to jumper the posts and get it to start. I made the mistake of using a parts store "lifetime" unit that took me 4 starters to get one that lasts, the 4.0 I-6 has a very interesting sound since it features the typical Chrysler starter sound but not on a V8.
Lexus V8 starters don't sound expensive enough. My truck's starter is pretty wimpy sounding considering there's nearly 6L under the hood.
Any V12, once I was out for a drive and I spotted an M760i at a spa at a strip mall in a big parking lot I was in. I parked somewhat near it and played on my phone waiting for the owner to come out and start it. And yep, it had that magical V12 whir. If only this poor woman knew there was a car freak stalking her (non-dangerously, obviously) to hear her BMW start.
That engine sounded good in general. It sounded powerful. I grew up on a big hill and there was a 3rd gen Maxima that always grunted (in a good way) up it when dude would come home from work.
Thinking back on all the times I've turned the key/pushed the button/pulled the ****/pulled the JFS starter:
I've never heard of any starter "motor" sounding anything other than perfectly smooth--it either rotates properly or doesn't rotate at all.
oh i got something i think qualifies for this thread! to start the SR-71 it used a "start cart" to get the turbojets up to speed, it was 2 buick 400ci V8s in tandem connected to a common driveshaft
but these were straight piped, 0 emissions to worry about, so yea i'm gonna say the coolest "starter sound" is a pair of V8s revving up followed by an afterburner ignition! (clip starts at 2:43)
