The IS350 recommended every 5K, and even though Toyota recommended 10K for my Camry and Sienna, I still always changed my oil at 5K. Using fully synthetic. BTW, another reason to hate dealerships.....

10,000 miles? Synthetic or not, LOL.

This is what happened to the Toyota 3.0L V6s when owners tried that nonsense...........

The LS up to year 2008 all said to change at 5k.....in 2008 the epa changed the rules regulating lubricant and manufacture responsibility for providing a pipeline for fluids to be recycled at the OEs expense.

Then at the same time you saw all the intervals increase or become lifetime.....I wonder why? They also get to claim lower TCO figures with long oil change intervals and free service for two years since it's only two changes now. Same thing Audi tried in the early 2000s yeah lead to massive engine failure issues and revision to shorter changes and better oils

Honestly, I'm not too worried about it. I've been doing the 10k intervals since my 2013 RX350 and haven't had issue. I am not sure what the first vehicle was that Toyota went to 10k mile oil changes, but has there been a statistical uptick in reported issues from that? I can't find any.

One point the mechanic was incorrect...oil analysis would start showing abnormal wear, especially after hitting 70 to 80k. That and the additive packages/flashpoints in the oil would be below thresholds. That's why I would always send a sample every other oil change even though I changed my oil every 5k

5K for me in my car and my motorcycles. I have over 250,000 miles on several bikes that seem to prove that Amsoil is good stuff. Any proper synthetic will have similar results. 10K might be ok in car engines as they don’t rev very high but, not for me.

I don't know the ingredients in what he was using there but, he was being pretty liberal in his use of brake clean for someone that claims to be concerned about the environment, that's what dishwasher type of cleaners are for.

On my 2010 IS350, 7000 miles was the sweet spot from oil analysis, but I still charged it around 5k

Back in the day my first "real job" after high school was working for a nation tire chain starting off as an oil changing grunt.
The old timers would come in with their coupons and get their "Lube, Oil, & Filter" every 3k miles on the dot.

What AMD forgets to mention is the combination of 0w-20 with 10k miles with the 2AR because of the aluminum cylinder block with thin cast iron liners.

This problem with the 2AR is unheard of in countries where the dealers use 30 weight oil as default on these engines like in Australia/NZ.

Toyota underestimated the wear from 20 weight oils on the thin liners.

Is 30 weight oil going to prevent the oil control ring from getting clogged? I doubt it.

They didn't underestimate it at all. They all made it past warranty period.

I haven’t watched the video. But did the original owner change the oil every year or 10k miles? Was it driven in extreme conditions such as start and stop or cold weather which requires 5k or 6 months oil change. Knowing where AMD lives, cold weather schedule needs to be followed.

So there are way too many variables to say if 30 weight oil is used according to either normal or extreme schedule the engine would be needing a rebuild.

Yes. The owner followed the recommendation of the their local Toyota dealer.

Any city driving situation should be considered severe. He does not elaborate on exactly the conditions car was driven in.

The math worked out to spending about $1200 more to halve the OCI vs. $6,000 job to replace the short block.
