It could have had an engine transplant, I guess. It also looks like it's had some re-shaping around the rear wheelarches as they aren't stock either.
Here's one, my wife was driving a blue one of these when I met her - she hated it but it was so bad it was actually fun in a masochistic way. It had a dashboard mounted gear lever with the most unusual shift pattern.

Well, it was a typical cheap French car of the period.....Cream-of-Wheat suspension, ultra-soft ride (for its size) to the point of being decadent, plush living-room seat comfort, El Cheapo-quality parts, sloppy assembly, things falling off the car before it is a year old, and an eccentric control-layout that would have most Americans pulling their hair out.
