Back then you always needed to have a can of chrome cleaner and polish in the garage.
With the exception of a few brands (especially Pontiac) metal chrome bumpers were more or less the norm well into the 1980s, before being replaced with the black or body-colored vinyl/rubber caps we mostly see today....although some full-size pickups still have a vinylized chrome finish.
