I remember those in very old cars when I worked in ‘service’ stations. Most changed them to spin ons at some point.

Classic Snake-Oil. Don't forget......this is the same publication (J.C.Whitney) that once sold the infamous "Engine Overhaul" tablets, that promised to replace worn-off metal on the rings/bearings/crank/valve-seals without having to take the engine apart and rebuild it. All you did was drop them in the oil-filler-cap....presto, you've saved thousands of $$$$$ LOL.

Heck, I still have one on a shelf in my shed! They seemed to work, but boy were they messy to change.

A spin-on oil filter is about the best engine maintenance replacement item ever! If the 350 engine had a spin on, I imagine a lot more Lexus folks would change their own oil.

I haven't seen the latest BMW filters, but, for years, I think they had a system where the engines had a permanent outer-housing and the shops changed inner-cartridges.

Same with all 2GR-FSE engines. It's still not oriented "the right way" (vertical, accessible from the top) and does not have a water to oil heat exchanger, unfortunately... but yes, it's just the media (and an o-ring) that gets replaced.

I had a buddy who had an early 50s International Harvester PU truck that used a replaceable cartridge filter. He realized that a toilet paper roll would fit perfectly and had probably seen one of these ads, so he gave it a try.

Within a few miles the TP, which certainly wasn't designed for the temperatures and pressures involved but was designed to dissolve in liquids, fell to pieces and clogged the oil passages. He stopped before there was any real damage, but had to do a ton of work to clean out all the oil passages. Fortunately, the engine was pretty much due for a rebuild anyway.

Needless to say, it's a bad idea.

While some people may have had a poor experience with the tp filter, many didn't. I didn't. Can't really speak to the technical efficiency of the filtering ability, but I never had any problems other than the messiness. The two filter screens seemed to hold everything in place.
