To my knowledge SC430 was the first car to use powered covers in order to get that big chunk of wood veneer effect all over the dash. Bentley does the same on current models with their rotating three face piece.
They're not power operated but Bentleys have had open-close wood panels that hid the center dash controls as far back as the Arnage (if not even further). The nav screen in that car would also flip down out of view. The wood veneer rotating display is merely an extension of those two things.

I see one almost daily in my neighborhood, black with stock chrome like finished wheels. It's nice, but it's just not nice enough. One of those cars you see out the corner of your eye and think "what's that", expecting to be wowed, then you focus in and it's all just "mehhh" and completely move on. This generation just doesn't have that spark/pizazz/etc at all.
You know what's funny about LSes. When I see one in my peripheral vision, the first car that pops into my head is the ES. I have to take a second look. But, I feel like even MB and BMW have this problem to a degree with their midsize and full-size offerings... It's funny how the ES really does come off like a more budget-friendly LS.

I agree they look very similar.
You can spot the LS over the ES though from its sheer size.

I don’t think they look that similar. LS500 has a strong presence in person. Very special. In the past LEXUS was a little on the boring side when it came to styling
I own an LS500 and am very disappointed that the ES is a clone. At first glance, especially from a distance, I can barely tell which is which. For the amount of money I spent, I would like to have some exclusivity. I love the interior design, but the smooth and quiet ride I had in my LS600h was far superior. I may be a candidate for an S-Class MB. At a rest stop midway through a 2,000 mile round-trip to South Dakota.

To be fair, the C class is a clone to the S class just as much as the ES is a clone to the LS. IMO, the LS looks a million times better than the W222, and especially the W223. I'm sure the big Merc rides and drives better.

This clone issue is a problem for the S Class too. I even have a hard time telling C Class, E CLass or S Class from the rear at a distance. But yeah the ride and drive of the S Class is way better than the LS500.
