I had to correct several "uninformed" people who said they want to buy a tesla : "because it can drive itself: 1) that way I don't have to worry about getting lost. 2) I don't like driving on the freeway. 3) if I'm tired, it can take me home. 4) he's getting old and can't drive that well, this way he can make it home safely"
Their answer, "Oh really, it can't drive itself? Why did they call it auto-pilot then???"
It's scary that these drivers are on the roads amongst us
I agree with most here that tesla is partly to blame for calling it auto-pilot, they should've called it driver's assist....
Suppose Tesla chooses a different name. Tesla Pilot, Co-Pilot, Elon-E-Drive. Whatever. Would that really stop regulators from going after Tesla? I highly doubt it.
The goal isn't to "Stop regulators from going after Tesla", its to make cars safer. I believe it would make these cars safer and better telegraph what the feature does, yes.

I have had the same conversations. This is 100% real. I have had this conversation with people spending $130k on Model Xs too.
There is NO DOUBT that consumers believe "full self driving" means their car can drive itself. And why wouldn't they!?!?

Regulators are spot on here.
Then why are regulators screwing around, force Tesla to change the name problem solved. Done.

I would imagine they will. This is how these sorts of things get done. There was an investigation, we are now seeing the result of those investigations and they will issue a formal statement, and it will be up to the government to impose restrictions on manufacturers. Its a process.
What if that investigation reveals driving on Autopilot makes the car safer? Then what?
Here's the issue. You don't drive on "autopilot". The car can never pilot itself, its not capable of it. People don't assume that GM vehicles with Super Cruise or Mercedes with Distronic etc can drive themselves. They DO assume that Teslas can, because thats what terminology like "autopilot" and "full self driving" make them believe.
So, the premise of the question is flawed since the vehicle never does drive itself.
The focus of the investigation is not the feature itself, its how Tesla is marketing it. Before I admonished the NHTSA for not including other carmakers in this investigation and singling out Tesla, but now that its clear what the focus is, its something only Tesla does.

How do you know that?
BTW Tesla says the hardware is full self driving capable, not that the car can do it. Even the beta tells you the car is not full self driving.
Talk to people. Where are the people posting videos in Cadillacs riding in them from the backseat? And thats what this investigation is uncovering.

Sorry, thats BS. Its called FULL SELF DRIVING for Christ's sake. Tesla charges $10k for that feature with that name. Its not at all unreasonable for a consumer to assume that when they paid $10k for their Tesla to have the "FULL SELF DRIVING" option, that it could drive itself! When I buy a self cleaning oven...I assume it can clean itself. When I buy a "non iron" shirt, I assume it won't need to be ironed. Its misrepresentation and its dangerous.
You get rightly frtustrated when people give Tesla a hard time for no good reason, but this is one of those times when you're being just as unreasonable defending Tesla as people are being unreasonable when they rag on the Plaid for not being the fastest car ever driven around the nurburgring.

This is a strawman and you know it, you're better than this.

Let's go to the source
Quote: Full Self-Driving Capability Subscriptions
Autopilot is an advanced driver assistance system that assists your car with steering, accelerating and braking for other vehicles and pedestrians within its lane. They assist with the most burdensome parts of driving and work alongside features like emergency braking, collision warning and blind-spot monitoring.
With Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability, you will get access to a suite of more advanced driver assistance features, designed to provide more active guidance and assisted driving under your active supervision.
If you have not already purchased FSD capability and your vehicle has FSD computer 3.0 or above, you can subscribe to FSD capability from the Tesla app or your Tesla Account.
Notice it says capability and assistance. Tesla never says the car can drive itself without any intervention or supervision. I agree the naming can confuse people that are too dumb to understand even the slightest nuance.

I am not defending Tesla for the sake of it, I would do the same for any auto maker. I hate misinformation and general stupidity. I hate bias and hostile agendas maybe even more.

They do call it a beta . I agree that Tesla brought this on themselves when they named it full self drive. I thought the name "Autopilot" was fine and people would get used to it being an advanced driver assistance. I think naming it Full Self Drive was very premature
Tesla doesn't need you to lie for them. Yes, they do call it "Full Self Driving" and it costs $10,000. Yes theres a disclaimer but people don't read disclaimers and the name of the feature lies about its capability
