Saw an Ioniq 5 in the wild today. oncoming traffic so it wasn't a long look. It looks fantastic Much better in person than in the pics or blog videos. it is definitely not a cross-over IMO, it is a hatch back, Hyundai is lying on that. The one I was bright white. I don't agree with some of the reviews that it looks bigger than the pics. I don't think it look that overly large.

The numbers don't agree with your belief.
It has a longer wheelbase than a telluride. It is longer and wider than a rav4. It is the same height as a Model Y. In no way can you use those dimensions and call it a hatchback. No hatchback has ever existed with those dimensions. You perhaps can consider it a wagon though.

I just got a ride in one after lunch and have to agree. It doesn't look overly large- in fact I think it looks fantastic. They have a home run on their hands. On the downside, there was a bit more noise inside than I expected and the omission of a rear wiper is ludicrous.
The Ioniq 5 is enormous. You're not going to confuse it with a Golf. Here it is next to the old Hyundai Ioniq and Santa Cruz.
I should try and sell my wife's 2020 Ioniq EV lease and get her into an Ioniq 5. I could probably come out on top, as the current lease is $190 a month. We got it before the shortages hit
it appears to be as tall as the tucson cuv next to it, and it's wider and it's wheelbase is gigantic and it's very roomy, so while its shape may say fastback/hatchback, i don't really care how it's categorized.

If you put the smaller wheels on the Ionic, it would even lower. Have you seen one in person? That is a Hyundai Venue

I think hatch has been reserved for smaller cars usually. There is no clear definition. I would call it crossover as it has a larger wheelbase than a Pallisade. I could call it a station wagon but typically, those are based off sedans. I would call cars like the GTI a hatch while Venza, Ioniq 5, and CX-5 crossover. But to each their own.
