Um, yeah? Not sure what you're trying to say. I would put decent money that F-150 Lightning wouldn't make it to Asheville from West Knoxville in one charge while towing anything significant.

If I'm driving through zero degree weather in my ICE truck it won't make my gas tank run out twice as fast.

 

I have one on Pre-order to replace our Sienna, but not expecting it until 2023. And no, I won't be towing any boats or trailers so pointless for me to jump into that argument

 

More power to people who want and buy them but they aren't going to be very good at "truck things".

 

It can carry a 1400 lbs payload and go 300 miles with that payload. 1400 lbs is more than my Sienna can carry, so to me that's what a truck is supposed to do

 

Payload is going to cut into range just like towing, it won't be 300 miles.

 

Ford say 300 miles with a 1400 Payload. If it's cut to say 250 miles, that's still good. But we will find out when the "real world" testing starts

Yep, human nature! Heck, real world testing could show it loses 100 miles of range. We certainly will find out if their claim hold true

 

What % of time is a truck used to tow? I can only speak to what I observe, rarely do I see any truck towing anything or hauling anything. This of course excludes people in the trades but again from my observations that is a very small slice of overall truck ownership.

 

I think it's funny how sometimes we get really heated on here... when all we have to do is wait 6 months or a year and we will all know, lol.

 

Where I live, people love and drive tons of F-150's and Chevy Silverado's. Like you, I rarely see anything being towed, nor do I see anything being hauled in their beds. One of my neighbors who lives about 2 blocks down has 4 Chevy Silverado 1500's that have been lifted and have giant off road tires. I have not seen one of those haul anything except people. I'm sure there are people who use them regularly to tow and haul stuff, but I suspect most don't

 

I see LOTS of trucks towing and hauling but you aren't wrong either IMO.

A neighbor of mine has a new F-450 (wasn't aware you could go above 350 as a civilian) that is absolutely ridiculous, probably cost over 100 grand. I have never seen anything in the bed, ever.

AJT123, you've made your point, EV trucks TODAY won't have towing range like an ICE truck. got it.

an EV truck is unlikely to be great at towing for a long time (until battery capacity improves) or maybe the trailers will end up with batteries and motors too so it's not just the truck doing the pulling, the trailer's doing the pushing!

remember when cell phones only lasted an hour or so? well look at what happened. mine lasts 2 days now! combination of bigger batteries and huge improvements in efficiency. same can and will happen to EVs. so all this trashing of ev towing capacity today ignores the fact that things will improve. but yes, TODAY they're not going to be good at it. but that doesn't mean an EV truck is worthless. maybe for you, but not everyone.

if ford has 100k reservations and projects it can only make 20k a year, 5 years is plenty, that's what the 'problem' is.

maybe you haven't looked at EV truck off road videos, but they will absolutely destroy ICE trucks there - better traction, better ground clearance, better steering (no ice in the way of the turning gear), on and on. and if you camp off road you have a wonderful generator for charging devices, lighting, etc.

 

The Rivian's do offroad really well due to precision control of all 4 motors on each wheel. I think if you tow a bunch, its better to get a ICE. I doubt they will ban ICE trucks anywhere in the next 30 years.
