They say the Toyota V12 is even smoother than the old 4.3 UZ V8 which seems impossible, not sure how you can top that one.

Go look at F80 M3 values.
I can get pretty close to what i paid new for my car which is 2018 Comp with LCI2 but even the 2015 cars are much higher.

As far as NA, they are great and that’s why you see E92, E46 and even E36 M3 increased like crazy in past 6 months.

Lexus LC500 is probably the best NA car u can buy excluding Porsche GT3 and GT4 which are impossible to get even if you’re paying over sticker.
I’m really looking forward to C8 Z06 with 5.5l NA V8.

I agree, there are not many different engine options now for BMW, at least in the US, they put that 2.0 in almost everything, use the same basic 3.0 I6 as the expensive upgrade engine, the M3/4 is a higher tuned version of the B58, 8 cylinder is same basic engine for the few cars it is in and then they have the V12 and that 3 cylinder in the i8 so only 5 or 6 basic engines in the US, in Europe they have more, diesels, smaller engines. How much more can they cut in the US, hopefully that 3 cylinder goes, they still need a 8 or 12 cylinder to be considered a full lux brand.

With moves like this and ones they have made in the last 5 years or so I have no real desire to get a BMW anymore, at least a newer one, they have mostly lost their magic/appeal. Huge nostrils, more FWD offerings, more EV's, less larger performance ICE engines, softening cars, touchscreen everything, turbo everything, heavy cars, I just don't think anyone would have predicted BMW would go down this route 10 years ago.

perhaps you're not aware of how many engines bmw uses/sells OUTSIDE the u.s.a.

plus they have many hybrid models now.

but to your point, the 2L turbo is not only popular with bmw, but with audi, mercedes, etc. they're all surprisingly smooth and plenty powerful, i suspect they will become by FAR the dominantly sold engines as diesels go away.

One exception would be the Dodge Viper which was an old push-rod truck engine with two extra cylinder and lots of displacement. V8's have a burly growl, whereas V12's may have that or something more distinct but smoother. The balanced nature of the V12 is why its favored in high end luxury cars, boats, aircraft, and even tanks. Of course it'll all come down to tuning and what application the V12 is for ie a Ferrari V12 or a Mercedes V12 have different goals.
idk what it is about V12s (i think it depends on the type of headers used) but they have like the widest discrepancy between this sounds GLORIOUS vs meh just kinda hums along... the Bizzarrini V12 used until the murcielago sounds unbelievable as does the AMG V12 when used in the zonda

but that same AMG V12 when in a mercedes doesn't really make much noise at all, similar case for that M760... however fit a pair of custom equal length headers to the mercedes V12 and it starts to sound like a zonda!

the mclaren F1 also never had an amazing exhaust note but possibly the best intake/induction noise from that fabulous BMW V12

Always loved when they put that Toyota Century V12 into a Supra,
