Actually he thought he shifted it in park and it actually wound up in neutral. Having had that Jeep, that happened to me many many times.
thanks. Yes, definitely a flaw. Opening the door and no weight on the driver's seat at least should force it to break and go into park. Of course Jeep took the cheaper route and went to an ugly huge 'traditional' shifter with leather boot instead.

Yup. BMW's shifter will put the car in park if you open the driver door with the car in gear.
So get this, the Jag F Pace rental I have not only puts it in park if you unbuckle your seat belt and open the door, it also turns the car off.
It’s actually annoying, because I have turned it back on several times trying to turn it off.
Is that a safety feature from opening the door, or an auto stop/start safety issue? On my BMW, if the engine shuts down with the auto stop/start, and then you open the driver's door, you will need to press the start button to re-start the car. But the car does not do this if the engine did not shut down (either because stop/start system is defeated, or the conditions didn't warrant a stop).
Every shifter fits me, I could even get used to an Acura shifter. Regarding electronic parking brakes, I like them a lot because it feels more upscales and often says high-end car.
I agree thats a really dumb design. My Pacifica for instance has remote start, and it stays running when doors are opened, you simply have to press the start button again when you get seated with the key in the vehicle before you can drive off. I don't see how Toyota (and apparently Mercedes)' system is any safer.
I find I don't use the remote start on the Lexus because it shutting off keeps it from cooling itself off well, I use the remote start in the Pacifica all the time.

I once thought there was a safety-interlock that shut the engine off when doors or hatch-lid were open, but apparently not. That, of course, keeps carbon-monoxide fumes from possibly entering the cabin. Perhaps today's gas vehicles run so clean that the engineers felt that, unless the vehicle was being run in a closed setting like a garage, the tiny amount of CO that would be entering the cabin is negligible. I also see vehicles running around all the time, carrying bulky items, with the trunk/hatch-lid partially tied down, which is the same effect.
