TORONTO--The OPP says they caught a young driver allegedly speeding at 308 kilometres an hour on the QEW Saturday night.

“This is the fastest speed that I’ve ever heard of,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a video posted to Twitter Sunday morning.

Schmidt said that the 19-year-old driver was in his father’s car at the time of the incident with another 19-year-old passenger alongside him.

“Unbelievable speeds, we’re talking 191 miles an hour, we’re talking 85 metres a second, 280 feet per second,” Schmidt said, questioning how a driver could properly react to potential obstacles on the highway at those speeds.A 19-year-old driver has been charged after he was caught allegedly speeding at over 300 kilometres an hour. Schmidt said that the driver was stopped near Burlington and was subsequently charged with stunt driving under the Highway Traffic Act as well as a criminal charge of dangerous driving.

The driver’s licence has also been suspended for seven days and the vehicle has been impounded for the same amount of time.

“This is absolutely egregious for anyone to be going those kinds of speeds,” Schmidt said. “The speed limit is 100, there’s areas where it’s 110. When you’re going triple the speed limit, I don’t even know where to begin with that.”

“So I’m pretty much speechless on this one.”

The car was going so fast that drivers passing by were “honking in delight” that the vehicle had been stopped, according to Schmidt.

Speeding offences have been on the rise since the COVID-19 outbreak began in Ontario in late January.

In fact, Toronto police confirmed last month that officers have been handing out an unusually high number of speeding tickets. Close to 3,000 speeding tickets were handed out between March 15 and March 31, an increase of roughly 35 per cent over the same period last year.
now that's some proper speed... were that my 19 year old son i'd kick his ass while simultaneously being quite proud

Yeah, what a kid.

Guess he disabled the limiter??? :uh:

Car & Driver: C63 AMG=
155 mph
Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph on the regular C63 and 180 mph on the S. In our testing, the C63 S went from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and ripped through the quarter-mile in 11.9 seconds at 122 mph; we haven't tested a C63.

I electronically limit the car to 75mph if anyone else drives my car. All future cars will have this ability hopefully :D

Early generation Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1's had a "Valet Key" in a second key tumbler that disabled the
second set of fuel injectors and limited other performance settings. Some Fords have a "My Key" function
that has similar limits. Might become popular if insurance companies offered some discount for having
(and Using!) the feature.

Those punishments seem light. This kid has no idea how lucky he is

That’s pretty impressive! That’s an easy punishment too.

A local guy did 200 MPH on the turnpike in my area and got in serious trouble. The police saw a video of him doing it online and busted him. I haven’t seen anything that crazy until this.

Question: What kind of tire is rated for that kind of speed? I would imagine a blowout at that speed would make for some interesting control issues.

Secondly, it's interesting how jaded people get as things evolve. Ever since seeing Captain Slow drive the Veyron to 260+mph on a Top Gear episode, I've come to regard 200mph as the reference point between "feh" and "cool." Can't hit 200? Feh.

Kid should have kept going.

why stop if you can outrun them lol

The car is a C63 amg so it’s plenty capable and tires are not an issue as long as they are OEM spec or better.
These cars are developed for the Autobahn and tested on the Nurburgring.

The current speed limits for modern cars are a joke that have not changed since the 60s-70s.

i wonder how many people saw the scene in Tokyo Drift where Han says how "police cars here are only factory tuned, if you can do better than 180kph they can't catch you, so they don't even try" and put that to the test lol

also have you heard of the great Smokey Nagata? his speed runs on the Wangan are legendary

i think it may be a 507 edition as well

and I know our speed 'limits' are dangerously outdated, but as long as tickets are such a big revenue source and our road test and driver etiquette is such a joke i don't see things changing... not to mention how many people there are who don't know better and think that once a certain speed is reached you'll spontaneously combust or something

if more people got to experience fast cars I think public opinion would slowly start to change
