AE86's Real Successor
GT86 is more like a Celica than any Corolla like I said Toyota wanted to cash in on AE86 nostalgia.

Was a stretched Celica (firewall forward) but with the I-6 instead of the 4 cylinder. Independent rear suspension although the GTS Celica also got the same rear setup. Otherwise the cars were very similar. There was a GT Celica Supra no fender flares or hatch spoiler and didn't have the sporty seats.

The 'spiritual' successor to the AE86 is the Toyota Altezza RS200 imho.
made by the same designer. RWD, powerful, but not overpowered, LSD, 6 speed. 4 cylinder high revving. well balanced, good handling, reasonably small. a lot of people on the internet have the same opinion.
the lexus is200/ is300 is good. but the toyota altezza RS200 is my favourite car on the planet. toyota reliability along with all the other fun specs. i should really buy one before i give them praise though. they are already expensive enough as it is.

I bought my AE86 in 1994 (and still have it) before anyone cared about them. I saw the meteoric rise in popularity which was largely because of the Initial D anime series in Japan in the later 90s and the touge drifting videos from Japan. It is not a supercar and you do have to be a skilled driver to drift in one partly because of low torque and bhp. It is easy to upset the car and get it sideways. The challenge then becomes keeping it from getting too out of shape.
