Depends on the vehicle in question. BMW made the e-shifter popular and no mechanical connection exists...on the opposite end, toyota still have products that still do the mechanical linkage even though it might seem as electronic.
Regardless of linkage, manual (gated) is ideal while the center console for auto is my preference. Buttons while appealing to some, just feel weird still (tested it on the mdx)
Oddly there was a recent bmw that debuted with mechanical shifter - the 2nd generation X1, but I believe it also now has electronic shifter after the refresh.
Button shifters free up some console space, but there is just something aesthetically pleasing about traditional center console shifters, even if they are electronic.
like how people blindly still stick to analog speedometers when i can just display a number on the screen. Or even worse when you have full LCD gauges but then end up making it still look like old analog gauges

I prefer analog speedometers, even within a LCD setup. But thats the great thing about these LCD setups, you can have multiple display options. I don't believe "cars MUST have analog gauges" lol
could make it look like anything a driver would want then they make it look like the old stuff. Its like having a smartphone and on the dial screen its a rotary dialer

Look in the app store lol, there are many rotary dialer apps.
I agree with someone above who mentioned the C pillar looks messy. Why does the C pillar have so many different shapes and material surfaces? Looks very busy and unattractive.
