I think it’s the same thing, over, and over again.

Personally? I just use what the manual says. It says premium recommended, so sure it would run on regular, but I want my car I paid a lot for to perform the best it can, so premium it gets.

Using premium vs regular costs me maybe $50 a month. Who cares.

Most people I know waste more money going to Starbucks 2x daily. The difference in fuel prices is irrelevant for me at this point.

We're getting an LX soon within a year hopefully, which absolutely runs on regular just fine. Here I'd be saving about $15 a tank.

That's significant to me, at least. When you're driving such a gas guzzler being able to use regular is great.

My LS430 I only put premium in bc it does feel sluggish with anything less.

Yes, depends on how much you drive. The LX and other vehicles with the 5.7 are definitely thirsty. Same 5.7 engine, so should run fine on 87.

for the LS toyota definitely wants you to only use premium whenever possible

for my dad's old (now sister's) 2004 camry SE V6 toyota seems to suggest that premium isn't as important

the E55 definitely only gets premium, when you're forcing air in at 13 psi you need all the octane you can get lol

Right, it's identical to what goes in the Tundra which asks for regular. I think the Land Cruiser does, too.

It's purely Lexus BS marketing that makes the LX call for premium....and I'm not falling for it.

Assuming a tank a week that"s $60 a month. That would knock out one of my utilities.

I wouldn't call Starbucks a waste. They make some good stuff, though it's usually cheaper to take it home and brew it yourself. The grocery where I usually shop sells Starbucks coffee, in bags, when it's on sale, for about half of what a Starbucks shop wants.

If your engine truly needs premium, or the Manual says it is required, not recommended, then fine....feed it the high-octane. But that's not why I did this thread....I was addressing people who can safely use regular, for less cost.

If I had an LX, and the manual recommended Premium. I'd run premium. Its a hugely expensive vehicle, I want the two ponies they engineered into the design of that vehicle over the Land Cruiser

in my moms 2004 LX manual it never recommended premium only that 89 octane as a minimum. Not sure about the new ones

Even though the only vehicle with the 5.7 that "requires" premium is the LX?

If you had a Land Cruiser would you put premium in that to gain the 2hp? If it was 20hp maybe I'd consider using premium and even then IDK.

In the GX I get it, that's debatable bc the compression is different than the 4.6 used in the Toyota applications, but in the 5.7 you're just throwing money away by using premium. It is absolutely identical to what goes in Toyotas. One reason, among plenty, I want the LX over the GX is bc I don't have to use premium. That will negate the worse mileage the LX gets and what it would otherwise cost me with the fuel bill.

I hate to sound like such a cheap azz but I just can't stand throwing money away.

My CX-9 is rated at 227hp on 87, and 250hp on 93. Mazda has actually released a graphic showing the HP/TQ curves, stating that if your driving habits keep you below 4000 RPMs, paying for premium fuel is "unnecessary spending".

Personally I put Shell 91 in my car because it's the highest I can get and because it's ethanol free. While I'm not always around the 4k RPM mark, I get there often enough for me to miss the extra power when I want it. The extra additives are a nice bonus, and a recent oil analysis sample came back with everything normal, so I'll just keep up with what's working for me.

On a different car, I'd take a look at what the manual recommends, then do some online research to see what others are doing, then make an educated decision based on the info at hand.

Yep...that was one of my original points. 40-50 cents more per gallon for maybe a 1% power-gain at the most? Not in my book.
