The BMW 3 series have longitudinal inline sixes but I don't recall them having extra long hoods??

Longitudinal engine RWD platforms can place the transmission at least partially under the front passenger cabin space. As visible from the diagram, with the engine sitting over the front wheels, the transmission sits behind the front wheels and under the front passenger cabin, shortening the hood.
Longitudinal-engine FWD platforms, however, cannot do this, since the transmission must include the final drive differential and half-shafts to the front wheels. This means that the transmission cannot sit under the passenger cabin space. As visible from the diagram, the engine must sit forward of the front wheels, allowing the transmission to sit over the front wheels; the transmission cannot sit under the front passenger cabin, lengthening the hood.
Seems like a lot of empty space behind the engine, and all that weight in front of the wheels.
It does look like a transverse engine sitting forward of the front wheels. If it has a long hood and long dash-to-axle ratio, there would be space behind the engine -- just like the latest Volvos.
That space behind the engine may not be totally empty and wasted if the exhaust manifold sits on the back end of the engine (like in new Mazdas with SkyActiv engines).
