Interesting thread. Looks like they might have changed one or two of them. A solid black flag, not one with an orange circle, used to mean that your car had a mechanical problem, and to get off the track ASAP.

But, when you have a bunch of vehicles all bunched up close together, like you often do in NASCAR, it's difficult for a mere flag to identify any single vehicle out of the bunch. That's why much of the communications, today, are done with radio.

As far back as I can remember, a solid black flag has meant the driver was disqualified for a conduct/safety violation.
