We got a new travel system, so I am filling out my preferences for the rental car. I will admit it didn't have any effect, when I did the same, on the old system in 2010.
I do wonder if there's any commercial (ie not Turo or similar) rental agency in the US that actually has a non-exotic with a manual transmission in their fleet. My guess is no. Even for the exotics I suspect it's exceedingly rare.
I rather doubt it. When my wife went to Germany in 2007, she said most of the rental cars were manuals (because she reserved entry level cars). Even though nearly 100% of trucks now are automatics as well, from YouTube, I see that 100% of people ordering custom Peterbilt 389's are all 18-spd manuals. So there are people on earth that are still alive who prefer a stick...it's scary to think that maybe in another 50 years, there won't be anyone on earth who can, or would want, to drive a stick!
edit just had a funny vision, it would be like that episode of Star Trek where Captain Kirk was trying to drive a manual car. I think they found a society where people based life on a book they found from the past, about Al Capone
