20 killed in single automobile crash in upstate NY.
I have not heard of a single automobile crash killing so many at once in the US, a speeding Ford Excursion limo went through a stop sign and crashed into a parked SUV. It was packed full of people, 18 people died in the limo alone with 2 bystanders also killed. Just crazy.

A limousine full of partying girls crashed and kill, almost seems like an elliot rodgers 2.0 with a different gameplan.

Needs to be seatbelt usage in all buses and limos. Story will likely (and should) end right there. Also, that Expedition was ancient.

Except for condolences and prayers for all who lost friends and loved ones, I won't comment any further until we know more about the details of the crash.

Update: after reading from this and several other sources, I'm thinking it was vehicle-overloading, brake-weakness/failure, and/or possible DWI on the driver's part.
Here's the "T" intersection. The limo was coming down that long hill and ran the stop sign at the T.

crazy that not a single person survived inside. that's really the worst... you get a limo as the safer, more responsible alternative to driving drunk, and this happens. also, is there nothing preventing a 20 year old stretched ford excursion from still being used for such services?

Seatbelts in a limo would be fkn retarded. A limo shouldn't be going over more than 40mph anyways. And the driver couldn't be sober for more than a couple of hours for his job? Mutants I tell ya.

A limousine carrying four sisters, other relatives and friends to a birthday celebration blew through a stop sign and slammed into a parked SUV outside a store in upstate New York, killing all 18 people in the limo and two pedestrians, officials and victims' relatives said Sunday. The weekend crash was characterized by authorities as the deadliest U.S. transportation accident in nearly a decade. The crash turned a relaxed Saturday afternoon to horror at a rural spot popular with tourists viewing the region's fall foliage. Relatives said the limousine was carrying the sisters and their friends to a 30th birthday celebration for the youngest.

Douglas said three of the sisters were with their husbands, and she identified them as Amy and Axel Steenburg, Abigail and Adam Jackson, Mary and Rob Dyson and Allison King."They did the responsible thing getting a limo so they wouldn't have to drive anywhere," she said, adding the couples had several children between them who they left at home.

2. It would seem to me that this accident completely disproves your theory. Are you suggesting that limos should be banned from highways? Or that they should drive on the highway in the right lane with their hazards flashing?

A limo is meant to be a low speed plaza cruiser. Its meant to draw some attention. You negate all of that when you open it up on the highway. Smart people rent a bus if they need to travel some distances.

Ironically, that's what this group did. But the Excursion showed up, and the driver told them the party bus broke down.

all the major news outlets are reporting that the limo used had recently failed inspection and that the driver did not have the required, commercial with passenger endorsement license for operation of a passenger carrying vehicle.
There is still some question as to whether the accident was the result of a malfunction of the vehicle (but it is looking that way) or the driver.
It appears the limo in question was a chopped vehicle, one that was cut and extended and required federal certification to be extended in the manner it had been, and it did not have said certification and was not compliant within State or Federal Laws. It was not legally allowed to be used or driven on public roads at the time of the accident.
