It should be a step above all of those vehicles IMHO. It always was in the past. These mainstream "near luxury" cars like the Avalon, Lacrosse, Cadenza etc have really stepped up their game to where they're the ES' peers, I'd like to see the ES deliver an experience closer to the Genesis G80 (albeit recognizing it will always be FWD), so that people feel like its a step above these non-luxury cars.
I couldn't agree more! The name Lexus should promise (and deliver) a special experience. Even though it is based on the same platform as the Avalon, the ES should have superior interior materials, better sound proofing, and more standard equipment. One easy change would be to equip ES with Michelin tires only, instead of the Bridgestones and Dunlops.

I think you are a little too hard of the ES for what is. It is also at the end of its life cycle for the current gen. Also, despite having a engine that debuted way back in 2004 for the 2005 MY in the Toyota Avalon, the ES still beats out the KIA Cadenza for fuel efficiency and its on par with the Buick LaCrosse for fuel efficiency as well despite having three less gears and no start-stop tech. No doubt about it though, the competition has stepped up its game.
As for the Genesis G80, its not really a ES competitor, the G80 is step above the ES, just looking at the specs, the G80 is almost 800lb heavier in 2WD form and probably more in AWD.
At the end of the day, an ES is supposed to a stepping stone for most buyers from a Toyota to a Lexus model. It is still a nice car.

^^ Agree. It's a bigger GS at an ES price point. If I was shopping for my ES today, I would be getting the G80.
Just as right hand drive Japanese Domestic Market JDM Toyota Crown caught testing at the Nurburgring in Germany, North American 7ES can be tested at Waterloo Belgium.

I still dont get why Lexus needs to sell ES and GS.
The sales people steer avg customer to the ES anyway bec its way cheaper and has more room inside.
This new ES will look very sporty and will follow in Camry's footsteps by offering more dynamic handling.
I wish Lexus can take the LC styling language, make a 4 door coupe and call it a GS to compete with new 8Series GC, Audi A7, and MB CLS.

Mike is right; it's great to have choices.
The ES has not only more interior space than GS, but it also has more interior space than E Class and 5 Series too, yet it's available at a fraction of the price - hence leather & plastics never been up to GS standards.

They are all three nice cars. That's why it was a tough choice myself, among those three (and the Lincoln MKZ), when I was shopping last spring, despite my general attraction to the Buick nameplate.
