Elon Musk wins in a landslide simply because he brought out a successful new car company in a climate where that rarely happens. Even if Tesla fails tomorrow he has still irreversibly changed the auto business. Before Tesla Motors the electric, hydrogen or whatever alternative drivetrain was something that was going to happen eventually "in the future".

People have also forgotten or never knew anything about Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne.
You can't condemn an auto maker for something that might happen in the future.
The going view among many in the auto industry is that Tesla will probably end up as a battery or electronics manufacturer, not an auto manufacturer. The decision to have company-ownership of all the dealerships, franchises, and service-facilities simply bit off more for them, in overhead, than they could chew.

Actually, it wasn't my forecast as much as from the auto press in general. But it is no secret that Tesla has bitten off more than they can chew in overhead.
