I have a legit handicap tag. When I have a good day I will park in a regular spot leaving the handicap spaces for those that may need them. I realize that there are many people that probably use them illegally but when one has an issue that allows you to have a tag you realize what a difference a few spots can make for someone who really needs them. And as an aside to previous conversation, I still work full time, not on SSI or SSD, going to work (almost) every day like most people.

Nowadays it's too easy to get a 'disabled' designation. That in lies the problem. My buddy was in the war too, he got hit by 3 IED's and the last one put him in a 6 month coma and fudged up his leg too. He earned, unfortunately, the disabled Vet status. Wouldn't wish that on anyone. Work in the health field long enough, especially the ER and you'll become jaded to peoples 'problems'; or at the least learn to differentiate the really sick people from the BS ones. I used to work at Publix (local grocery store), and they constantly hire disabled people, whether it be physical disabilities or cognitive ones. I have respect for those people.

I don't see it as being prejudiced at all. If you earn a highly livable income, why do you need SSI as well? We'd all like more money, BUT if you're capable of making more on your own, why dip your hand in the pot as well? Listen, I had a tumor that ended up causing me to lose hearing on my right side. I only hear in mono now. Is that a disability? I'd say so, probably not recognized by the government that way. I can't pinpoint noise for the life of me, all sound sounds like it's coming from everywhere for me. I still work, I still function and don't dip my hand into the pot.

TLR, no I don't feel that being poor is a requirement for being disabled.

as Coleroad said, it is a matter of confusing the 2 programs, and I am guilty of it as well in my post. Collecting SSD is a right, you paid into that system, similar to paying into a retirement system, so you are entitled to collect from it regardless of whether or not you have a healthy income without it.

SSI is for people that can't work and yeah if you have a healthy income then you can't legally collect SSI, there is a breaking point and that is where the abuse lies, with the SSI system, people gaming the system for extra monies they are neither entitled to or paid into.

If you can't walk a few more yards to a further parking spot, then just do your shopping on line.
I wouldn't say misguided, take the tag off if you have the rearview mirror one. Don't let people assume. Again it's not a HUGE deal for me, just a little pet peeve.

See I've never heard of SSD, only SSI. That's what I meant with SSI though that your income needs to be low to receive it. Again, I knew I would ruffle some feathers here.

I don’t see how anybody can have an issue with somebody who has a handicapped tag parking in a regular space. It just wouldn’t even occur to me to perceive that as an issue.

Having a handicapped tag doesn’t mean you have to park in handicapped spaces, it means you can if you need to.

i think everybody just needs to concentrate on themselves and what they are doing.

How about if the symbol is on the plate, and I borrowed the car from someone else? Now, I get ticketed for not using a handicapped space, AND someone sees me running into a store or gym or what have you and I'm arrested or insulted....this could only happen to Larry David.....

On this, and many other issues, unfortunately.... The fact that anyone would get upset that a car with an HCP tag is in a regular spot is just beyond me. This would be a perfect story line for the new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
