Wonder if they stick to numbers that once existed, like 560 SEL SEC etc., or would they be like BMW and have a 565, 570, etc.....I never gave it any thought that the V8 in the S550 was a 4.7 liter, and is now 4....because the number "seemed" to be in line, ie. not 745, but 750, not 755, but 760, etc. I know it's marketing, but they must have discussed it at the mfg....
There is never a S550 outside N.America, the rest of the world always call them S500.
It was a couple generations ago they upgraded their top non-AMG V8 from 5 litre to 5.5 litre that they change it to S550 for horsepower loving N.Americans (particularly USA who loves big numbers, but decided to stick with what they then consider more traditional S500 for the rest of the world even for the 5.5 litre V8.

I betcha that one I saw on cars.com that had a S500 badge, they accidentally put it on due to body work but somehow got the wrong badge (clean carfax lol).....
With this badging thing, I think Infiniti is maybe the worst, all of a sudden 60 means 3.7 liters...but 60 is much better than 37 so why not? lol I think 60 even can mean 2 liter 4 cyl as well.

Infiniti is using the 3.0L VR30DDTT now in the Q50 and Q60.
I just love the way the snob-mobiles refer to their product by its "class" or "type" as if it were a 20,000 ton capital warship.
Time was: the first car they make is "A" (or "1"), then "B"... get it?
If you listen, Mercedes will tell you several different stories about what the letters and numbers mean - and they change all the time.
The new S class has no V6 engines in Europe, its the new inline 6 in the S450 and the diesels. The S 500 is also a inline 6 but with 435 hp. The 560 is a V8 and 469 hp.
What I like:
Steering wheel: it's gorgeous and sporty.
What I don't like:
The unibrow LED DRLs are gone. I thought the simplistic design was both elegant and distinctive to the S-class.
I'm sure C-class owners also appreciated the design because it was shared with both cars.
mb really did a great job on this generation of s class. they totally leave the 7 series behind imho, not to mention lexus with effectively the same car from 10 years ago.
Mercedes apparently does not recognize the value of subtlety.
If the grill emblem were any bigger it would be visible from the space shuttle. You know, the peasants must get out of the way so the ubermenschen can pass?
As usual, MB is setting the bar for the luxury sedan. Absolutely beautiful car inside and out. I was behind a brand new S550 coupe a couple of days ago...talk about a bold but beautiful design. Wow.

S63 coupe has an even better behind, and looking forward to the facelift/upgrade for the S class coupe/convertible ...
