Hi I have been thinking it might be a good idea to get a code reader to re-set error codes that come up from time to time such as the VSC code or Check engine code. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is a good type of code reader to get. I see some people recommending the ones that use your Android phone and others are stand alone. And what sort of price point should I be looking at. I don't think I need or want an expensive commercial one that a Mechanic would use. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks very much
I typically recommend a midrange Actron like this or this. This Foxwell looks pretty sweet but I'm not familiar with the brand.
The downside with any of these is that there are a lot of systems that don't interface via the OBD protocol. You'll be able to reset any code that sets your check engine light, but I don't believe you'll be able to clear the VSC light, unless it's caused by an underlying brake or electrical issue that does throw a code into the OBD space.
Just buy techstream, and use it on your laptop. It's less expensive than a cheap code reader, and should you ever need to read body codes and such you can. You can also change personal settings in the vehicle.
